Seattle Strike is part of a national coalition to create a red line against authoritarianism through a strategic general strike and coordinated, peaceful civil disobedience.
We are organizing in the top ten metro areas by GDP and beyond for maximum impact and negotiating power to protect the midterms.
Our goal is disruption of the current power structures that leads to a more just, equitable United States that works for all, not just the wealthy and powerful. -
Achieving the 3.5% target of US population meaningfully involved in resistance can seem daunting, particularly in time to protect the midterms.
By mobilizing the top ten metro areas, we will have a disproportionate impact on the economy while putting our energy into the deep coalition building needed for success.
The top ten metro areas generate approximately 35% of total US GDP. Impacting these areas would send ripples throughout the United States.
Seattle is one of these critical metro areas and our steering committee has relationships with key activist groups and unions throughout the US.The top ten US metropolitan areas by gross domestic product (GDP):
New York-Newark-Jersey City,
Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim,
Chicago-Naperville-Elgin,
San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley,
Washington-Arlington-Alexandria,
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington,
Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land,
Boston-Cambridge-Newton,
Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, and
Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington.

Unions will form the backbone of this movement with a rich history of winning rights for all of us, deep skills in organizing, and a rare approval rate of nearly 70% in the U.S. Partnering with labor unions is critical for a successful general strike.
Despite legal obstacles, unions have found ways to lead as they did in Minnesota as part of a powerful coalition.
Union actions are not limited to conventional strikes. Work slowdowns, work-to-rules actions, and sickouts effectively cause economic disruption while limiting legal liabilities.
It’s important that everyone, in addition to unions, take on their share of the responsibility in this movement. This is not a conventional labor strike; we are fighting to maintain our democratic rights.
That will require all of us to walk side by side with labor and share the risks involved.
We have many union members on our team and are committed to forming a diverse coalition in the Seattle area and across the country of labor unions, activist groups, faith-based organizations, veterans, students, and more. -
Coalition members will have access to training, learning from other member organizations, and a voice in strike strategy and organization.
We will also participate in boycotts and other forms of protests, including short term strikes, in the lead up to a general strike.
All member organisations will have a role in those actions and a chance to learn from their implementation. -
Member groups are expected to:
Adhere to our value of nonviolence
Promote Seattle Strike to their members
Use all channels available to them to communicate a call to strike/protest in accordance with a coalition approved communications plan.
Participate in trainings and coalition decision making as they wish.
The strike will only be as strong as our partnership in the Seattle area and nationally. We ask member groups to commit to helping build that partnership.
