FAQ
What’s the plan?
Seattle Strike is a collection of union members, activists, artists, faith leaders, business owners, and more who are committed to non-violent, economically disruptive actions on an unprecedented scale across the United States to preserve our democracy.
We are a coalition organizing in the top ten metro areas by GDP and beyond to coordinate a strategic general strike and civil disobedience campaign for maximum impact and negotiating power.
We believe we must be organized in time to defend the midterms and that investing in diverse, representative partnerships within communities that give voice to traditionally marginalized groups is essential.
Our end goal is not the preservation of the current power structures but a disruption that leads to a more just, equitable United States that works for all, not just the wealthy and powerful.
What is a general/social strike?
A General Strike is a coordinated, prolonged refusal to keep society running for the benefit of the ruling class.
It can consist of work stoppages across multiple industries
Consumer boycotts and other economic actions
Rent and loan payment strikes
Mutual aid networks to keep people fed, housed, and supported
Rolling strikes, work-to-rule, slowdowns or sector-specific walkouts
Public disruption (marches, occupations, etc.)
The term “Social Strike” may best fit our effort. While the US does not have a tradition of the people rising in defense of democracy, that tradition does exist in Europe. Read more about social strikes, here.
When do we strike?
History shows that General Strikes are:
Spontaneous
Contagious
Sparked by an external event that drives widespread outrage and disgust
Our job is to prepare for that moment. We will analyze different scenarios, prepare various responses, train for them, and develop rapid communication and mobilization plans capable of reaching significant portions of our partner metros’ population.
Ultimately, the decision to strike will be made by a vote across our national coalition.
What are the demands?
We will all determine specific demands together once we assemble the national coalition and all members and partners are represented.
The list of demands should reflect our objectives of ensuring free and fair elections and securing our ability to shape our future as a country free of authoritarian rule.
We believe the list of demands must be succinct and reflect those objectives rather than immediately attempting to achieve all of our policy goals if we are to be successful.
This will be a complex discussion; we look forward to engaging in it with our partners.
How can I help?
Individuals can help in many ways. A few areas include:
OUTREACH: Help our team reach any demographic or group that will make a positive contribution to the coalition.
MUTUAL AID: Prepare to support strikers who may lose income during the strike.
RALLIES & MARCHES: Organize events leading up to and during the General Strike.
SOCIAL MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS: Help spread the word!
Partner organizations are expected to:
Promote Seattle Strike to their members
Participate in trainings, planning sessions, and events
Utilize all communication channels to mobilize a general strike upon a vote by the national coalition
What if I can’t strike?
Not everyone will be in a position to risk their jobs or paychecks. There will be many ways to support the strike that fit different risk tolerances, from online organizing to helping provide mutual aid.
There will be a role for you, and we want you on the team.
